Community gardens are everywhere in London- spaces in the city where people learn new skills, spend time with neighbours, complete trainings and qualifications, and enjoy wildlife and plants in an ever increasing built-up urban environment.  They show the potential and need for food systems in the city that work with people and nature to produce fresh, nutritious food for all!

New community farm launched in Cheshire with huge support

On Monday 22 June Bridge Community Farms in Ellesmere Port brought together its local community to celebrate the inception of its sustainable farm initiative. This great project aims to build a bridge between different sectors of its community and get them all working together for the common good.

The idea is to offer permanent job opportunities to the long-term unemployed, and a therapeutic environment for people with mental health problems and disabilities. They will grow and sell fruit, vegetables, salads and herbs to the local community. There are also study facilities for children and young people to learn horticulture, food preparation and basic business skills. The project’s start up costs have been entirely covered by donations from local businesses and individuals and all profits will be invested back into the farm.

A visit to Queens Wood Cafe Garden

Back in Spring CFGN went to meet grower Poppy at the Queens Wood Cafe community garden in Muswell Hill as part of the mapping project of community food activities in London.   Spring was in full swing and blue bells had just exploded through the litter layer of the woods- a subtle reminder of the effect of green space in the city after a tube journey and walk along the main road.

The garden began in 1998 at the same time the derelict lodge building was brought back to life as the Queens Wood Cafe.  Behind the cafe and in an enclave of trees the former lodge keeper’s garden was found and a well nurtured healthy soil.  During the visit a number of woods walkers took solace on the benches in the garden to read, sit, and observe the activities of the horticultural space and wildlife.
